*You walk into a room with a set of desks around, and a group of vets lined up on one wall. One motions for you to take a seat with others. A young man gets up to the teacher's desk, and starts to speak*
First off, welcome to the Learning Room. We are really glad you are here, and we want to teach you more about role playing, for your benefit, and the site's benefit. I'm known as Alagador Swiftback IV, and each of us-Legolas Greenleaf, Brandybuck, Blade, Mossa Silverback, Seabreeze Swiftrun, Tinsy Stormsight-am I forgetting anyone-oh yes, Dupple. Each of us is going to talk about something in a new thread, and rant and rave about what we think you should follow. I will start.
*You prepare to learn, and take notes*

OOC: (please do not get mad at me) should you RP other people's characters?

Well, what do you mean by that?
For example: I role play Tinsy's character? No, you are not supposed to do it. One of the joys of role playing is seeing the other RPer's reaction.
Example: *Alagador swings at Tinsy, and the sword is knocked from her paws*
That's what's called autohitting. It's a no-no. We'll have somebody cover that later...
Or, are you talking about a known Redwall/LOTR, POTC, Spiderman character?
In some cases it is acceptable to a certain degree (the more advanced RPing you go; the more and more you need an original character.), such as my character, Alagador Swiftback IV. There is an Algador Swiftback (notice the spelling difference? ;D) in the books. I modified him, and changed it. Still, if I could do it all over again; no, I would create a new, original name, like yours, Flameclaw! ;D
I hope I haven't rambled too long, and I hope that answers your question.
OOC: Thanks for the advice, Tinsy.
Flameclaw, I'm not going to be mad at you! Don't get the idea. You're in here trying to learn and we are trying to teach you! ;D

Yeah, you know here's an example:
Don't make your character too powerful. For each strength you give them, put in at least one weakness to balance them out a bit. For example, if your character is exceptionally well armored then they probably won't be very agile or fast. But don't feel the need to conform to stereotypes.
