Chapter Three
Leaving the Orphanage
After leaving Mr. Clavie’s office Kel went up to her room to start packing. Since she didn’t have much, it didn’t take her long to pack. What she really needed was food for the trip. That would be easy enough to get, people were only in the kitchen one hour before and after each meal. So if she went right away she could get what she needed and leave before lunch.
It was going to be even easier escaping the orphanage. It was a sunny Saturday, there were sure to be tons of kids playing outside. Nobody would notice if she slipped out. She just needed to make sure she hurried. Kel looked at her watch, it was 10:00 AM. She had an hour before the lunch workers would arrive, plenty of time to gather a few weeks worth of provisions.
Kel snuck out of her room with two packs, one for food, and the other for clothes, and her bow and quiver of arrows, as she was sure she would be hunting for her food from now on. Kel crept down the hallway. Suddenly she stopped and hid behind a door, as she heard voices approaching. As she peeked around the door she saw Mr. Clavie talking to some new prospective parents. She saw the gray-haired man walk into his office with a man and woman, talking about which child they wanted to adopt. Kel waited until she was sure the door was closed before moving on.
A few minutes later Kel stood at the door to the kitchen. She had forty minutes until the kitchen workers would show up. Still, she had to be careful. Kel crept silently into the room. It was empty. Thank goodness for that, she thought to herself. Kel tiptoed to the shelves containing the food. Bread, oatmeal, dried fruits, and crackers went into her pack. She then headed over to the fridge and picked up a gallon of water, and some cheese.
Satisfied, Kel turned to leave the kitchen but instantly froze as she heard voices approaching. She quickly searched the kitchen but couldn’t find anywhere to hide as someone started to open the door. If only there was a way to create a diversion. Suddenly, the fire alarms went off and the intruders left.
As Kel left the kitchen she noticed everyone heading for the nearest exit. She raced to the exit nearest her, which happened to be the entryway. The workers were doing their best to keep the children under control as smoke poured out of various rooms. Kel rushed out of the orphanage with many of the others as their home was being burned to the ground. Trembling at what she might find, Kel reached around her neck and pulled off her amulet. She was filled with horror and dread as she saw it was glowing a burning red.
Kel glanced at the people around her. The workers were calming the crying youngsters while Mr. Clavie tried to restore order among the older group.
“Now, now everyone,” He said. “I just called the fire department and they’re on their way right now. In the meantime just relax and stick together, I don’t want anybody wandering off.”
A few minutes later the firefighters arrived and soon had the flames put out. While the firemen went inside to see how much damage was done Kel took the time to slip away from the crowd. She took one last look at her lifelong home and with a heavy heart turned away and ran from everything she knew.
After the firemen inspected the building the Head of the Department walked up to Mr. Clavie. “I’m sorry sir, but the building in beyond repair. We’ll try to find temporary homes for the children while you rebuild.”
“Thank you so much,” said Mr. Clavie. “But I’m not going to direct St. Jesmira’s anymore, that job now goes to my assistant Miss Brown. I’m actually starting a new orphanage not too far from here that a friend of mine and I have been working on for years. It’s a boarding school for orphans, but unfortunately, it is only for the gifted, so not everyone is able to join. If you want to talk to Miss Brown, she’s over there with the children.” He said as he pointed out a short brunette comforting a four year old boy.
As the Head of the Department went over to talk to Miss Brown, Mr. Clavie took the time to slip away from the crowd of people gathering to see what happened. As he headed over to his silver Camry he pulled out a cell phone from his coat pocket and dialed a number. The phone rang three times before someone on the other end picked up. “Eric,” Mr. Clavie spoke into the phone. “It’s Joseph. It’s time to head over to the boarding school. The next generation has begun.”
