Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted here, so a lot of things have changed to my story. I'm just going to delete everything and start afresh. Enjoy ;-)
Chapter 1
The Dream
Kelanna was having one of her dreams again. She had been having the same dream every night for the last few months now. It had bothered her at first, but now she was merely puzzled by the meaning.
The dream started with her looking at the big oak trees that stand outside Jesmira’s Orphanage. Her vision stretched across the different streets and fields of West Virginia until it led to a forest unfamiliar to Kel. The forest gave way to a huge, mountainous region with peaks covered in snow. The mountains gave way to a glade in which lay a sparkling pond. The dream then led her to the other side of the pond where a building like Kel had never seen before stood tall and proud, the only piece of technology in the otherwise green valley. The odd structure looked like a half boarding school, half military base, with all sorts of antenna and satellite dishes sticking out all over the top of the building.
“This is where you must go Avinitiah,” said a voice in her head. Kel was startled; there had never before been a voice in her dream! The voice continued, “Only then will you be able to train yourself and help our earth.” Kel was afraid, but strangely excited at the same time.
“What if I get lost?” she asked.
“Your amulet will guide you,” was all the voice said. “Good luck Avinitiah.”
It was morning when Kel awoke. Dawn’s light shone through the windows of Jesmira’s Orphanage into her room, making her red hair glow like fire. Kel had lived at the orphanage practically her whole life. The workers at the orphanage told her they found her when she was only a baby. They had no idea who her parents were; all they could find was an amulet around her neck. Kel looked at the amulet now. It was a strange thing. The chain and amulet itself were brass, but in the middle of the amulet was a gem. Normally gray, Kel was startled to find that it was glowing many different colors. The amulet only started glowing a year ago after her thirteenth birthday, once “things” started happening…
On the day of her thirteenth birthday, Kel decided to hold a party and invite the girls from the orphanage. Everyone came and everything was going great, until a group of boys came and started wreaking havoc. They upturned tables and threw both food and gifts out the second story window, and then they scared all the girls away with water balloons.
While the co-workers punished the boys, Kel locked herself up in her room and cried, devastated by the failure of the party. That night a huge storm raged outside, which Kel thought suited her emotions. She didn’t think much about it, but was startled to find her amulet glowed a pale gray as the storm raged on.
There were a few other instances like that. One summer day a few months later, Kel sat under a thinly branched tree to protect herself from the sun’s heat. The sun still beat down on her and she wished for more shade. Like magic the branches on the tree thickened and offered her plenty of protection from the sun. Puzzled by this, she again found her amulet glowing, this time a bright green.
After a while people started avoiding her, as if they thought she was a sorceress or something. Maybe she was, she didn’t know. Kel admitted she did look a lot like a sorceress with her red hair and amulet hanging around her neck, and all these weird happenings just weren’t right. Even her name was unusual. Then there were the dreams.
Kel thought of these things a year later as she sat in her room. It had only been a month ago that she started having the dreams. They were only about the forest, the mountains, and the glade until last night. Kel mulled over what the voice had said. Something about going there to train and save the earth. Then about her amulet guiding her, what was that supposed to mean? It clearly puzzled her and after meditating on it for a while she decided to go down to breakfast.
Once down in the cafeteria she took her breakfast and sat down at an empty table. It was no use sitting with anyone; they would just move somewhere else. None of the others wanted to sit with a sorceress. Once she sat down and started her breakfast she began to think more about her dream.
The voice said to leave the orphanage, and even though neither the kids nor the workers liked Kel, it was home, the only home she knew. Still, the prospect of going on an adventure excited her, and most of all she wanted to see if there was anyone else like her out there. Someone who knew what she was going through and could help her figure out what was going on. That was what she wanted the most.
Yes, Kel decided, I will go. As soon as she made that resolution a booming voice came through the overhead speakers in the cafeteria. “Will Miss Kelanna come to the director’s office, please. I repeat, will Miss Kelanna come to the director’s office, please.” Embarrassed that people were staring at her and puzzled at why the orphanage director would want to see her, Kel stood up and walked out of the cafeteria. She wondered if she was in trouble or worse, if someone found out about her ability. Reaching the door to the director’s office, Kel pushed all thoughts aside and knocked on the door. “Come in,” said a voice from within. Bracing herself, Kel opened the door and walked inside.
