Role-Playing Basics
In this post I will go over some of the basics to role-playing.
First: Form of a Post.
When rping you should follow a few basic forms of proper posing so others do not get confused.
To show action use asterisks or the little **’s. put a * before you post your character’s action and after your done typing what your character’s action is. You can put one star or two, its up to you.
Example:
** Dupple climbs up the rickety ladder and hops over the wall. Scanning the courtyard he knocks an arrow in his bow. **
Dialogue is another issue in post form. Do not put asterisks to show speech. And do not use quotation marks either. Instead simply post what you want to say without any symbols surrounding it.
Example:
**Dupple fires off two arrows and then yells back toward Blade **
How many arrows’ do you have left?
** Carefully aiming he targets and an orc running across the courtyard. His arrow flies strait into its side, crippling it. **
It would probably be smart to combine action in your posts that you have dialogue in but it is not required.
Second: Word variation and Complex sentences
Try to make your posts exciting. Exciting posts make the quest seem to be more fun. There are boring post like:
Example:
** Dupple gets hit by the bullets. He doesn’t fall. But he bleeds. He turns and shoots toward Blade **
This is a boring post. Try to make this post more exiting by putting more variations of words and more complex sentences in instead of “ He doesn’t fall “ A more elaborate post would look like this.
Example:
** Dupple takes the gunshots to the chest. He manages to keep his balance while turning towards his assailant. Bleeding badly he pulls the trigger and spays rounds of gunfire towards Blade. **
This is a much better post. It requires a little bit more typing then the other one but it puts more excitement into the quest.
Third: Present tense posting.
It’s a good idea to post in the present tense. Not posting in the present tense makes it seem like what you are taking about isn’t happening right now. Acting out what happens is much better then telling what happened. Past tense posting looks like this:
Example:
** Dupple bled from the wound in his side. He patched it up so that the blood wouldn’t drip so much **
I am used to posting in present tense so I don’t know if this is a good example. However an example of present tense posting might look like this:
Example:
** Dupple was bleeding from the wound in his side; carefully he patched it up with some bandages he found near the campsite. **
Present tense posting might require a few more words then a past tense post.
Fourth: no god-moding.
God-moding is when you role-play in a quest for too long while not taking any hits. If you are role-playing for five pages and never gotten hit then you are clearly god-moding. Try to avoid this by taking minor cuts or bruises or when appropriate even dieing during the quest. God-moding is not a serious crime in role-playing. Everybody does it by accident, even veteran rpers. God-moding can also show up in a single post.
Example:
** Dupple dodges the huge chain thrown by the troll. Then moving under it just in time to be missed by a swing of its club. Behind it he readys his sword to stab the troll in the back. Suddenly the troll thrusts his club behind him but Dupple rolls away at the last moment… **
This is god-moding if you have posts like this through the whole quest.
Try this:
** Dupple’s shoulder is clipped by the huge chain thrown by the troll. Shoulder bleeding badly he moves under the legs of the creature luckily not getting hit by a swift swing towards him. Barley able to lift his sword he readies to stab the troll in the back. Suddenly the troll thrusts his club behind him and nocks Dupple’s sword from his hand… **
This post could be a good idea so you can have a few posts afterwards that you do not get hit in. If you post like this in a quest (more then once, mind you) you are not a god-moder!
Fifth: no autohitting.
Autohitting is when you post that you hit some one else without them agreeing that they were hit. Confusing? Autohitting doesn’t really matter when there’s no one rping the thing your fighting.
Example of an Autohit:
** Dupple rushes Blade and swings his sword into his shoulder **
This is AGAINST THE RULES! Try not to automatically say that you hit another person. Try changing that post to look like this:
** Dupple rushes Blades and swings his sword at his shoulder **
Notice that this way you are not saying you hit him, your just saying you’re trying to hit him. His next post might look like this:
** Blade side-steps the swing and a thrusts his sword toward Dupple’s chest **
Another example of changing an Autohit into a legitimate post is this:
Autohit: ** Dupple shoves his sword into Blade’s arm **
Legitimate post: ** Dupple tries to shove his sword into Blade’s arm **
By simply adding one word the post that post would not be considered as autohitting.
Have fun!
